Mexico – “Feliz Navidad!” In Mexico the Posada recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for accommodation just before Jesus’ birth. A procession including Mary on a donkey with Joseph by her side go door to door asking for “room at the inn”. They are always turned away, told there is no room. The procession usually ends up at church for mass and a piñata party.
Australia – “Merry Christmas!” Christmas is celebrated during Australia’s summer season. Many Australians celebrate the holiday with a barbecue feast or outdoor picnic as it can be very warm at this time of year “down under”.
Spain - “Feliz Navidad!” The 3 Wise Men bring gifts to the children of Spain, who leave their shoes on the windowsills filled with straw and carrots for the horse of the Wise Men. In the morning they usually find the horse food replaced with gifts and treats for themselves. This is usually done on Epiphany rather than Christmas though, which is a deeply religious holiday in Spain.
