Backpacks
- The
Problem with Backpacks
by Synergea
Family Health Centre
With
the new school year just beginning it seems appropriate to
discuss the problem many of our children are experiencing
as a result of their backpacks. Textbooks, homework and other
supplies place a heavy load on our children’s backs
which can cause back pain during the school year and may progress
to chronic back pain later in life. In 1998 the United States
reported that over 12,700 children between the ages of 5-18
went to the emergency room to seek help for backpack related
injuries. The reason is quite simple... >>Read

Headaches
By Dr. Lindsay Dalziel, D.C.
This is
where my chiropractic story begins, where the seed of my chiropractic
passion has been planted. I have always had an interest in
my health and the health of others. I have always had the
focus of attaining a career in the health care area but felt
overwhelmed by the distinctly different schools of thought.
There were so many options, so much to choose from... >>Read

What is
Aromatherapy
Peppermint,
lemon, pine, lavender, rose…think of these words and
you’re likely to think of the scents they create and
possibly even memories they evoke. Our olfactory membranes
(scent detectors) are made up of brain cells and are the only
part of the central nervous system exposed to the environment.
They exist to smell our fragrant world and tell us about it,
but they are also linked to the emotional centre of the brain...

as non-living parts of Nature, and of responsibility for future
generations.

AROMATHERAPY RECIPES
Fever
reducer: Fevers are a wonderful way for the body
to rid itself of infection and though they can be difficult
to experience or watch in loved ones, they are actually a
wonderful sign that the body has a functioning immune system.
When they reach incredibly high temperatures, though, fevers
can result in febrile seizures – an experience that
can frighten both child and parent. If a fever is becoming
extreme it can be brought down a degree or two with the following
method. Of course, do not hesitate to contact your health
provider should you be concerned and/or other symptoms are
present. Add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to 2 cups
of lukewarm to warm water and mix well. Dip a clean cotton
or linen cloth (facecloth works great) into the solution,
wring and apply to fevered leg. Repeat as necessary and comfortable.
Congestion
unclogger: Place 3-4 drops of eucalyptus in a diffuser
to help relieve congestion and purify the air when a family
member has come down with a stuffed up nose and clogged chest.
Alternatively, 3-4 drops can be added to 1 tablespoon of carrier
oil. This mixture can be added to a bath or rubbed on the
chest of older children and adults.
Insect
Bites: Like lavender, lemon essential oil can be
applied directly to insect bites to relieve itching and reduce
or avoid swelling. Be sure to avoid sunlight for at least
6 hours after applying though.
Burns:
Apply lavender oil directly to burn area.
