Earthy Child
The Earthy
Childhood – what a glorious time to be alive! Check
out our articles on “Encouraging your child to eat healthy”
and “Backpacks” and check our recommended links
in this section on the Earthy Child. Childhood is such a short
time in the span of a lifetime yet one that is so important
in the life of each person and ultimately, for our communities.
So embrace your natural path and join your child’s journey
to discover themselves and the world around them. As always,
remember that “Earthy” living is about being in
harmony with your natural self. However that manifests itself
in your life – enjoy it!

children will see what you're all about by what you live rather
than what you say."

Backpacks
- The
Problem with Backpacks
by Synergea Family Health Centre
With
the new school year just beginning it seems appropriate to
discuss the problem many of our children are experiencing
as a result of their backpacks. Textbooks, homework and other
supplies place a heavy load on our children’s backs
which can cause back pain during the school year and may progress
to chronic back pain later in life. In 1998 the United tates
reported that over 12,700 children between the ages of 5-18
went to the emergency room to seek help for backpack related
injuries. The reason is quite simple... >>Read

Headaches
By Dr. Lindsay Dalziel, D.C.
This is
where my chiropractic story begins, where the seed of my chiropractic
passion has been planted. I have always had an interest in
my health and the health of others. I have always had the
focus of attaining a career in the health care area but felt
overwhelmed by the distinctly different schools of thought.
There were so many options, so much to choose from... >>Read

A
Wellness Approach for Children
By Jane Sheppard
In raising
healthy children, it’s not enough to just focus on the
physical aspect of health. To be truly healthy, a child’s
emotional health must be nurtured and strengthened. Developing
a mental attitude of wellness is also essential. When we adopt
an attitude of wellness, we take on a belief that being well
is a natural, normal state. Our goal is to have outstanding,
vibrant health, not just to be free of disease. With a wellness
attitude, we know that we have control over our own body and
how healthy it will be.... >>Read

Encouraging
Children to Eat Healthy
By Jane Sheppard
Many
parents are frustrated at times because our children won’t
eat the foods we know to be healthy for them. Simply being
informed about a healthy diet for children is not enough.
If your child does not want to eat healthy foods, it does
them no good at all. So what does a parent do? Give up and
take the path of least resistance? This path is serving the
typical American diet which we know leads to poor health.
Our children deserve better. But how do we convince them of
that? >>Read More

Thriving
Through the Season
Living in Harmony with Colds and Flu
By Jane Sheppard
Taking
care of sick children can be a rather challenging aspect of
being a parent. Waking up in the middle of the night to the
sounds of your child's cough, feeling your child's feverish
body against yours, and cleaning up vomit is something you
may be familiar with. We all knew there would be times like
this in our parenting experience. It's inevitable that kids
get sick. It's a necessary part of growing up, a normal part
of childhood... >>Read More

What is
Aromatherapy
Peppermint,
lemon, pine, lavender, rose…think of these words and
you’re likely to think of the scents they create and
possibly even memories they evoke. Our olfactory membranes
(scent detectors) are made up of brain cells and are the only
part of the central nervous system exposed to the environment.
They exist to smell our fragrant world and tell us about it,
but they are also linked to the emotional centre of the brain...

Fever
reducer: Fevers are a wonderful way for the body
to rid itself of infection and though they can be difficult
to experience or watch in loved ones, they are actually a
wonderful sign that the body has a functioning immune system.
When they reach incredibly high temperatures, though, fevers
can result in febrile seizures – an experience that
can frighten both child and parent. If a fever is becoming
extreme it can be brought down a degree or two with the following
method. Of course, do not hesitate to contact your health
provider should you be concerned and/or other symptoms are
present. Add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to 2 cups
of lukewarm to warm water and mix well. Dip a clean cotton
or linen cloth (facecloth works great) into the solution,
wring and apply to fevered leg. Repeat as necessary and comfortable.
Congestion
unclogger: Place 3-4 drops of eucalyptus in a diffuser
to help relieve congestion and purify the air when a family
member has come down with a stuffed up nose and clogged chest.
Alternatively, 3-4 drops can be added to 1 tablespoon of carrier
oil. This mixture can be added to a bath or rubbed on the
chest of older children and adults.
Insect
Bites: Like lavender, lemon essential oil can be
applied directly to insect bites to relieve itching and reduce
or avoid swelling. Be sure to avoid sunlight for at least
6 hours after applying though.
Burns:
Apply lavender oil directly to burn area. If burn is severe,
contact professional advice immediately.

need guidance and sympathy far more than instruction."
